The Sweetest Return: Chocolate University Alumni Who Give Back
by Missy Gelner
At Chocolate University, our mission has always been rooted in transforming young lives through experiential learning, global connection, and real-world impact. But one of the most beautiful outcomes of this journey is watching our alumni return to give back to the very organization that helped shape them. Whether volunteering their time, serving on the foundation board, or stepping into part-time roles, our graduates are living proof that the mission of Chocolate University doesn’t end with graduation—it grows.
A Legacy of Leadership
We are especially proud to recognize the three alumni currently serving as active board members:
- Taylor Curtis (CU ‘10) – A strategic thinker with a heart for CU, Taylor brings thoughtful insight and passion to our mission. Taylor also founded our first alumni giving program – the Kujengana Scholarship.
- Maliq Hill (CU ‘12) – Maliq’s energy and experience as a former CU student inform every decision he helps make on the board.
- Bryn Prater (CU ‘10) – Bryn’s leadership is grounded in her longstanding belief in community-driven development and the CU experience.
“I have no doubt that my participation in the Chocolate University High School Business Immersion program provided me, directly and indirectly, with educational and professional opportunities that I would not have otherwise had. In particular, I now have the privilege of serving as a member of the board of directors for The Askinosie Foundation, which enables me to combine my professional experience and my experience as a CU alumnus to further develop Chocolate University’s programs for the next generation of students.” –Taylor Curtis (CU ‘10 and current board member)

These board members represent different classes and years, showing how the CU experience spans generations but creates a lasting bond.
Teaching the Next Generation
Emma Brand (CU ‘16), a standout alumna, has served as the lead teacher during CU summer school programming – Springfield Public Schools Summer Explore and Drury University Summer Scape. She returned this year to serve as the Educator and Adult Chaperone for the Chocolate University Class of 2025. Her unique perspective as a former participant brings a new depth to the Drury and Tanzania experiences, offering students guidance and an inspirational model. She is a mentor sharing the very footsteps her students now travel.

“Returning to Tanzania as a mentor to the class of 2025 is a true manifestation of the vision I wrote in 2016 before my trip. I’m thrilled to see farmer partners again and work with students on projects and visions. I know the CU Class of 2025 will embrace the opportunity to see the world through the eyes of kinship and mutuality, and I hope that they see their visions and new experiences as guiding principles throughout their whole lives.” —Emma Brand (CU ‘16)

From Students to Staff
Siblings Anna Mercer (CU ’16) and Avery Mercer (CU ‘23) have each stepped into roles within the Askinosie ecosystem. Anna has contributed significantly as a Communications Lead for Chocolate University, using her storytelling skills to amplify our impact. Avery supported Askinosie Chocolate with his photography skills and social media management while attending Drury University last school year.
Their involvement exemplifies the full-circle journey: from high schoolers learning about ethical trade and entrepreneurship to professionals shaping the future of our organization.

Donor Spotlight: Alumni Giving Back
In addition to the invaluable time and talent our alumni contribute, many also choose to support Chocolate University financially. These donations, no matter the size, are especially appreciated and have a direct impact on current and future students. This year, alumni contributions are responsible for three student scholarships for the Chocolate University 2025 class. Alumni donors demonstrate a remarkable commitment to the mission of Chocolate University, often reflecting the profound influence the program had on their own lives. Their financial support, combined with their volunteer efforts, creates a powerful cycle of giving back that sustains and enriches our community.
Every financial contribution from our alumni represents a personal investment in the future of Chocolate University. These acts of generosity are a testament to the transformative power of the program and its lasting impact on the lives of our graduates. Each penny donated helps provide resources, opportunities, and support to the next generation of students, fostering a legacy of giving that strengthens the entire Chocolate University community.
Past Alumni Contributions
The tradition of alumni returning to serve is long and sweet:
- Delaney Cannon (CU ‘18) lent her talents and time to CU programming in past years as a Summer Explore Teacher.
- David Langdon (CU ‘10, pictured) also contributed as the Askinosie Storefront Manager.
- Hannah Wasson (CU ‘20), another dedicated alum, stepped in to support the C Street storefront and CU communications.
Each of these individuals played a unique and valuable role, offering experience and perspective in their positions.

A Testament to Transformation
What makes this especially meaningful is that these aren’t just one-off engagements. This is a pattern—a movement—of young leaders returning with open hands and open hearts. Their willingness to serve is a validation of the life-changing impact of the program. Their leadership, time, and talent are the most genuine endorsements of our work.
“Chocolate University serves as such an inspiration for myself personally as I know it does for so many. I love how much focus the organization puts on education and increasing business acumen in its participants. This allows students to understand how the economics of the business work, and is such an important demonstration that businesses of all sizes can make a huge impact in their communities and in causes abroad.” –Maliq Hill (CU ‘12 and current board member)

As we look to the future, we are both grateful and inspired by these alumni. They remind us that the real harvest of this work comes when seeds planted years ago grow strong and come back to nurture the next generation.
Thank you, Taylor, Bryn, Maliq, Emma, Anna, Avery, Delaney, David, Hannah—and all who continue to give back. Our world is sweeter with you in it.
