Seeds That Grow: Parent Reflections on Chocolate University
by CU Executive Director Melissa Gelner
I’ve spent 10 years traveling to Tanzania with Shawn and truly love watching high school students grow before my eyes—hearts opening, minds expanding. I’ve always felt it was a privilege to witness the transformation that happens through Chocolate University. But this year was different. This year, my own daughter, Cadence, was selected to join the CU class.
Stepping into the experience as both a parent and a leader was challenging and humbling. I am deeply grateful for the chance to see the seeds of CU take root in Cadence. Watching her learn alongside new friends, listening to cocoa farmers with genuine curiosity, and becoming part of a community she will carry with her forever—it is why this program matters so much.
As parents, we all want our kids to encounter moments that shape them. Moments that widen their world, deepen their empathy, and strengthen their confidence. Chocolate University does just that.
I wish every parent could come along to witness the transformation happening in real time. There is nothing quite like seeing these young adults step away from their busy worlds into a new culture with courage, curiosity, and compassion. But even at a distance, I know you feel and see it too.
Below, I’ve selected a few comments from other parents of our CU 2025 participants—words that echo the gratitude, pride, and awe so many of us feel.

I’m not aware of any other program where high school students get the chance to participate in and observe firsthand international business transactions, especially with a company focused on ethical practices and transparency. Sarah returned with a better understanding of ingredient sourcing and global connectivity. She loves to bake, and since Tanzania, she does so with greater appreciation for the sources of her ingredients and thoughtfulness as a consumer. I hope the program continues to flourish so that many more students can experience the magic of the people and the chocolate.

When he was selected for CU 25, Will was a high school senior recovering from a serious injury and rebuilding his confidence through discipline and focus. From the very first prep session, a spark of change was visible. Will said it was one of the first times he had spoken up in a new group of people. From there, his voice and confidence grew. He built friendships and mentorships that expanded his world. His pride in Chocolate University shines when he speaks about his time in Tanzania working alongside cocoa farmers, learning about international trade and real community impact. We’ve witnessed the power of transformation that Chocolate University inspires. Today, Will is thriving as a confident college student studying supply chain management and international business. As a parent, I am grateful that the CU opportunity has helped shape who he has become.
